C011. Baer (p. 38). Mr. Fox Makes a Failure

This is Chase011.

Types ATU0066B Sham-dead (hidden) animal betrays self
Motifs K0607.3 sham-dead

Notes

Gerber cites Ravan and Fox on shore of Red Sea

Lipple has parallel from Madagascar: "Crocodile's children call guinea-fowl and her children to mourn crocodile who is feigning death. Guinea-fowls sing that if crocodile is dead, he will move feet, open mouth and eyes. When he does, the fowls fly away."

for K607.3 there is listing of Mbongwe story where rat induces sham-dead leopard to lift his arm and shake his body, which Mofokeng also cites.

Lambrecht has a Luba story with antelope saying that dead leopards usually move their ears.

Bear: "Although Thompson does not include Africa among his references in either the tale type or the motif index, the tale appears to be as popular in Africa as in India, where it presumably originated."

There are West Indian analogues. Baughman has a human example from Texas.
