In Flowers, Jamaican and Puerto Rican versions  "differ only in that the imitation of the mother's voice is accomplished by filing the tongue"
conclusion: "While the tale type is equally popular in Africa and Europe, this version is totally African; even the song and refrain are made up of what seem to be non-sense syllables. The previous tale very likely derived from African tales; this one almost certainly did."
