The "hearing music" temptation occurs in both Europe and Africa

From David Barrow in at University of Georgia in Athens, in 1881 Harris received a version of a story where "Bro' Rabbit's tail was bit off by a catfish, and he ran home through a cottonfield. 'A lock caught on the bleeding stump and Bro' Rabbit bin cotton tail ever sence'"

Baer notes: "Except for the Daddy Jack stories, and until the turn of the century, Harris adhered to his policy of "verifying" stories he obtained from correspondents by means of oral versions from Negroes. Since Barrow's explanation was not used, it is safe to say that Harris never heard it; furthermore, he would not add a middle Georgia etiology to a coast story."
