Notes

Baer cites Harris comment: "this story was told to one of my little boys three years ago by a Negro named John Holder. I have since found a variant (or perhaps the original) in Theal's Kaffir Folk-Lore."

Baer then concludes: "It is clear from Harris's footnote that he knew this only as a Negro tale. As with the story of the three pigs, the puzzle is that in the last decades of the nineteenth century, these stories were not considered part of the European folktale tradition in this country."
