C120. Baer (p. 122). Why the Hawk Catches Chickens

This is Chase120.

Types
Motifs
A2435.4.6 food of hawks
A2494.13.10.3 enmity between hawk and hen
H1371.1.1 quest for place where sun comes up
Notes

she cites Jones Buh Fowl-Hawk and Buh Rooster as almost identical.

Thompson cites ATU0120 First to See Sunrise, but "there is no resemblance here to his summary of the tale type."

For the motifs, she says: "the motifs fit the tale descriptively, but the examples are not necessarily analogues to this tale."

It's more like a theme: "While the reasons differ, explaining why hawks hunt chickens is an African interest."

Baer also cites a Limba story collected in 1961 from a man who had traveled abroad; "His Sun, Hawk and Hen is a close analogue to this Uncle Remus tale. Of the 21 tales told by this narrator, only one other bears any resemblance to any portion of an Uncle Remus story (Chase160). However, in view of the date and background of the informant, his knowing this tale tells nothing about direction of transmission."
