Types
Motifs

F0031 child of deity visits earth
F0051.2 sky basket
Notes
See Chatelain 13: son of Kimanaueze and the daughter of sun and moon, "differs in only a few details"

as expected, fewer magical elements in the American story

"In Africa, Frog rather than Lizard is the messenger, and when he takes Sun's daughter to earth, he steals her eyes, then returns them to her and takes her to her bridegroom. Also spider weaves a web for the girl to reach earth."

Baer notes that this is an example where Chatelain's story persuaded Harris that his story "was of authentic African origin."

See Fauset for a version from Alabama in 1925. "Of course by that date it would be difficult to know whether or not the taleteller had been influenced by Uncle Remus."
