Baer gives no type or motif, but instead just a note based on Mofokeng as follows: "In an African tale tortoise finds lizard in a hollow log and cuts off his tail in retaliation for a trick lizard had previously played on him; there is a similar Gold Coast tale in which guinea-fowl and hare are the principals."
