Baer cites letter Harris received in 1907 from Isla S. Nichols in Sonora, Mexico where owl, dove, and paisano (road-runner) loaned Pajaro Coo feathers to appear in beauty contest: "Coo left, and the three other birds have been calling Coo ever since."

conclusion: "While Thompson's references are northern European rather than Spanish, the evidence indicates this is a New World variant of a European tale."
