Previous Homepage

This is a new website (created December 2018) for my work on the Brer Rabbit stories collected by Joel Chandler Harris. You will find the texts of these books here: Uncle Remus: His Songs and His SayingsNights with Uncle RemusTold by Uncle Remus, and Uncle Remus and Brer Rabbit. I will be adding the texts of the other books as well; you can see an index to the complete tales here. The other books are: Daddy JakeUncle Remus and His FriendsUncle Remus and the Little Boy, and Uncle Remus Returns.

I have also been harvesting images from public domain sources: illustrated editions.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

Bibliography
I have not written up a lot of bibliography so far, but there are two important posts to check out:
Chase's Complete Tales: Links to online courses for all the tales.
Lester's Complete Tales: Links to the Harris versions for each of the stories retold by Julius Lester.
Online Books: A list of over 100 full-text online books, most of them public domain, for the study of African and African-American folklore.

Book Guides
I have written book guides to Uncle Remus: His Songs and Sayings and Nights with Uncle RemusThese guides contain links to online courses for both texts and audio, with pages listed for the Chase and Lester editions of the complete tales. You can also browse the stories here at the blog:

Illustrated Editions
I have been harvesting illustrations from public domain editions online at Internet Archive and other sources. You can browse the all the illustrated stories, and you can also browse by artist:
   Frederick Church and James Moser
   Fritz Eichenberg
   A. T. Elwes
   Arthur Burdett Frost
   Frank Verbeck, J. M. Conde, and A. B. Frost
   Milo Winter

In addition, I am working on editing the stories, removing the frame tale (step one), and then standardizing the spelling (step two). Since the original books are freely available online, my goal is to increase accessibility by providing these edited versions. You can view my progress here:

I've worked hard on getting this site up and running so that I can then work on it slowly but surely in 2019. Here are the tasks I have lined up:

Stories:
* finish writing summaries for the stories not in Lester
* finish adding placeholder posts for the rest of the stories
* add placeholder posts for the rhymed versions of the stories
* transcribe the stories not already digitized at Gutenberg
* write up book guides for the remaining books
* add sidebar widgets for contents of remaining books
* finish removing the story frames
* do standardized spelling versions

Types and Motifs:
* finish creating posts for types and motifs
* annotate motif and type posts
* collect best African analogue texts
* collect best Caribbean analogue texts
* collect best Native American analogue texts
* collect best European analogue texts
* collect best South Asian analogue texts
* write comparative commentary for each story
* write stylistic commentary for each story

Bibliography:
* add bibliography of online articles to go with online books
* start collecting relevant Native American bibliography
* start collecting relevant European bibliography
* add story lists for public domain African collections
* add bibliography of print materials
* post secondary reading notes

Illustrations:
* create Flickr albums from download folders
* digitize my two public domain illustrated books
* add remaining images to the posts
* check image placements in all posts
* update widgets with new images
* update the Flickr tags
